While industrialization and nationalism were transforming urban and agricultural life throughout Europe, Western society itself was reshaping the world. At the peak of its power and pride, and the west entered the third most dynamic phase of the aggressive expansion that had begun with the Crusades and continued with the great discoveries and the ride of seaborne colonial empires

Objective

With this blog I hope to accomplish the common idea of the chapter overview so anyone who didn't go through this lesson has an understanding of what imperialism is about

EQ:

How and Why after 1875 did European nations rush to build political empires in Africa and Asia?

After 1875, Western countries used a combination of brute force and self-justifying ideology of a "civilizing mission" to carve out vast political empires in Africa and rushed to establish political influence in Asia. There were many reasons for this empire building, but economic motives, political competition and super military technology were particularly important. In addition, many Europeans justified imperialist expansion on the basis of civilizing and christianizing primitive peoples, whom they believed they were racially superior to.

Imperialism Cartoons

This displays further of the "White Man's Burden" with three African American persons eating with a wealthy white man who seems more than pleased to share food with them.

This displays imperialism through the hands of each person touching a slice of pizza which represents Africa. At this time, the majority of these countries wanted a portion of Africa for trading purposes as well as power.

US Cartoon :)

I feel the artist attempted to display through this comic the imperialistic characteristics of the US always wanting more because we are consumers. Obama's quote saying "It takes a child to raze a village" is indication that our child of the nation will become more greedy over the years and destroy the economy even more than what it is now. Our parents lived in a more simpler time and that's something our children's children will never understand. I agree with with comic. It's just sad to see what the human race in the US has come to.

#4

Us Imperialism: In some cases no, because we merely make agreements with other nations, not necessarily attempting to rise above and conquer like displayed with the African Congo scenario. But, in some ways yes because we as a nation make trade treaties with other nations

Pros:
    - wont have to manufacture some things ourselves
-Have support from other countries for future needs

-in some ways cans be cheaper.

Cons:

-can get expensive with some things, for example, importing gas to the USA

- if we as a country don't pull through on our side of treaty agreement, war or national arguments can occur

- cause further issues down the line if blame is placed on USA

2 US Events

Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882

Chinese came to America looking to strike it rich with hopes of being to send money back to their poor families, or of returning to China after a few years with newly acquired wealth. Another reason is America served as a symbol of something higher than monetary prosperity. It represented the hope of freedom from intolerance based upon one's particular views. However, the most important reason for Chinese immigration was economic hardship due to the growing British dominance over China after Britain defeated China in the Opium War of 1839-1842. So, these are three reasons why the Chinese people came to the US.

America's response to the immigrants resulted in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 in which too may Chinese were hoping to look for a better life in America.

Connection: I feel this correlates well with the continents as far as The British wanting to interrupt the Congo and other parts of Africa to get better trading goods. In relation to the Chinese coming to America to look for better quality of life

Assassinations of 1881

Czar Alexander II, the ruler of Russia since 1855, is killed in the streets of St. Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of the revolutionary "People's Will" group. The People's Will, organized in 1879, employed terrorism and assassination in their attempt to overthrow Russia's czarist autocracy. They murdered officials and made several attempts on the czar's life before finally assassinating him on March 13, 1881.

As czar, Alexander did much to liberalize and modernize Russia, including the abolishment of serfdom in 1861. However, when his authority was challenged, he turned repressive, and he vehemently opposed movements for political reform. Ironically, on the very day he was killed, he signed a proclamation--the so-called Loris-Melikov constitution--that would have created two legislative commissions made up of indirectly elected representatives.

Less than four months after his inauguration, President Garfield arrived at the Washington railroad depot on July 2, 1881, to catch a train for a summer's retreat on the New Jersey seashore. As Garfield made his way through the station, Charles Guiteau raced from the shadows and fired two shots point blank into the president. One grazed Garfield's arm; the other lodged in his abdomen. Exclaiming, "My God, what is this?" the president collapsed to the floor remaining fully conscious, but in a great deal of pain. Soon after doctors began to attempt taking the bullet out, but this resulted into a gaping hole which further led to infection, as well as arising temperature, resulting his death

Sepoy Mutiny

The Great Rebellion

The 1857 and 1858 insurrection by Muslim and Hindu mercenaries in the British army that spread throughout northern and central India before finally being crushed.

I
Into detail....
Britain ruled India until 1947 until Indian Independence was gained.

1858- India was ruled by British Parliament in London and administered by a tiny, all white civil service in India

Strict job discrimination and social segregation

     British Women:
played a big role after the opening of the Suez Canal. It made it easier and Muslim people  for civil servants and businessman to bring their wives and children with them to India.

          Large houses

Small minority of them went further and were known as "The White Women's Burden," attempting to improve the lives of Indian women.

English was soon taught in school systems

Irrigation projects for agriculture the began, the world's third largest railroad network for good communications and large tea and jute plantations boasted the world economy

With a well-educated bureaucracy who now spoke English as well, this created a more unified and powerful state
Laws Hindu and Muslim people were constantly conquered by Muslim and Mongol invaders. It was like Europe with its many states and varieties of Christianity had been conquered and united.

1885 - Hindu Indian National Congress demands were increasing for the equality and self-government

No. 7

    The Ukraine Divide

There are three core components to the current outbreak of civic unrest:

1- A broken promise between a leader and his citizens: President Viktor F. Yanukovych had a promise to Ukraine with the European Union by signing sweeping political and trade agreements.

2- The Cold War-era fight between Russia and the West for influence over countries in Eastern Europe still suffering from political and economic problems rooted in the soviet era. This problem is due to wanting to expand of Western Europe and its economic power. So, as perceived by the military as a threat to not only the military but the economic threat, Russia exerted enormous pressure to scuttle the accords with the European Union.

3- The outrage of the government's sometimes brutal response to the street protests that followed the president's about-face on ties with the European Union. The crackdowns deeply contradicted Ukraine's gas supply, and eastern Ukraine's heavy dependence on Russia for business and trade.

Spotlight!: Suez Canal

Suez Canal -- 2014

In the year 2014, it has been decided that Egypt's Lt. Gen. Mohab Mamish is to take authority over the Suez Canal for another occurring year. The Suez Canal is used day and night for transport purposes with hundreds of ships going up and down it. This importance is getting augmented with the evolution of maritime transport and world trade. The maritime transport is the cheapest means of transport, whereas more than 80 % of the world trade volume is transported via waterways (seaborne trade).

3-2-1 Summary

Three things I learned from this unit:

-Russo-Japan War was the first time in Asia that their country defeated European power in 200 years

-The White Man's burden : "Teaching the virtues of cleanliness"

-10 million victims killed or maimed under King Leopold II's rule

Two things that interested me:
-This unit correlated with Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

- Reading about the Livingstone-Stanley story

Why did people agree to King Leopold's "brief" treaties if overtime they were aware of the results of what he was doing to his people? Did they not know?
